(KTVI)- Legendary St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon is in his 42nd season on the Cardinals radio network. A St. Louis native, Shannon broke into the big leagues with the Cardinals in 1962. He played right field and later third base. His career was cut short by nephritis, a kidney disease, in 1970.
He joined the Cardinals front office in 1971 as assistant director of promotions and sales and entered the broadcast booth in 1972.
In 1999, Shannon was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. In 2012, Shannon was announced as one of nine broadcasters named finalists for the 2013 Ford C. Frick Award.
He and his late wife, Judy, have six children, 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His name is on two St. Louis metro area restaurants, Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood Downtown and Mike Shannon’s Grill in Edwardsville, IL.
