Carlos Beltran, Allen Craig and Matt Holliday all homered in the Cardinals 8-5 win over the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee. Beltran’s 2nd inning two run blast traveled 442 feet over the center field wall, banging off the scoreboard. It was Beltran’s 22nd home run of the season. Allen Craig topped off the six run 2nd inning by the Redbirds with a solo homer, his 12th this year.

So the Cardinals built a 7-0 lead for struggling starting pitcher Jake Westbrook. He lasted just four and two thirds innings, allowing five runs, four of them earned, leaving the game with the Cardinals ahead just 7-5. Matt Holliday’s 16th home run of the season stretched the Cards lead to 8-5. Edward Mujica allowed a 9th inning run, but did get his 33rd save of the season.

The Pirates lost their game 2-1 in San Diego on Wednesday, so their lead over the Cardinals in the NL Central is down to just one game. The Cardinals begin seven game home stand on Thursday at Busch Stadium with a four game series against the NL East Division leading Atlanta Braves.
