Joe Kelly continued to be the Cardinals best pitcher, winning 7-2 on Sunday in Pittsburgh as the Redbirds avoided a sweep by the Pirates. Kelly pitched six innings, allowing just one run and raised his season record to 7-3.
The Cardinals jumped on Pirates starter Kris Johnson with three runs in the first inning. Allen Craig and Yadier Molina had RBI singles, while Jon Jay added a sacrifice fly for the third run. David Freese’s two run double in the third made it 5-0. Matt Holliday drove in a pair of runs in sixth inning with a single to right.
The win vaults the Cardinals back into a first place tie with the Pirates. Both teams have identical 79-57 records. The Cardinals begin a four game series with third place Cincinnati on Monday with Adam Wainwright pitching. The game begins at 12:00 PM St. Louis time.
