The St. Louis Cardinals come limping home from an 11 game road trip, having lost their fourth in their last five games, 4-1 to the Mets on Thursday afternoon in New York. The Redbirds built a 1-0 lead on a Tony Cruz RBI double. But the Mets quickly answered with two fifth inning runs off Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn. Chris Young’s monster home run into the third deck in left field tied the game at one. Daniel Murphy’s run scoring double gave the Mets the lead for good at 2-1. New York added two insurance runs in the seventh inning.
Lance Lynn took the loss, dropping his season record to 4-1. The Cardinals offense could only bang out four hits in losing to 40 year old Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon. The Cardinals finish the 11 game road trip with a 5-6 record. The Redbirds return home to start a weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals season record now stands at 12-11.
