The battle for the fifth spot in the Cardinals starting pitching rotation will go right down to the wire in Spring Training. On Tuesday, Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly, the two pitchers competing for the last starting spot, both pitched against the Marlins. Miller started the game and pitched four innings, allowing no runs, only one hit, while striking out three. Kelly then pitched the next three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.
The Cardinals built a 5-0 lead on a solo home run by Allen Craig and a two run double by Matt Carpenter. They held on after Kelly’s rocky four run 7th inning for a 5-4 win, Mitchell Boggs pitched the 9th inning to get the save.
The Cardinals also announced after the game that they have released veteran shortstop Ronny Cedeno, meaning Pete Kozma has won the starting shortstop job for the Redbirds.
