Molina out with ligament tear, Wainwright cleared to start pitching

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- Yadier Molina suffered a “slight ligament tear” in his left thumb according to St. Louis Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak. Molina left Sunday’s game against the Cubs after being injured tagging out Anthony Rizzo on a sacrifice-fly attempt in the 8th inning.  He will be reevaluated later to see if he can return to the team this season.

Tony Cruz is scheduled to start at catcher for Monday's game against the Reds at Busch Stadium. Catcher Travis Tartamella has been brought up from AAA Memphis. Xavier Scruggs was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Mozeliak also announced that Adam Wainwright has been cleared for baseball activities. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the team may try to use him as a reliever. Wainwright injured his left ankle while batting in an game against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 25.
