The San Diego Padres kept the Cardinals on the skids Wednesday night, winning 3-2 and sweeping the series from the Redbirds in San Diego. Kyle Lohse lost for just the third time this season. Lohse pitched six innings and allowed all three runs. The Cardinals could only muster four hits off Padres pitching. Matt Carpenter accounted for the two Cards runs with his 5th home run of the season, tieing the game in the 6th inning. But San Diego got the go ahead and eventual winning run on a run scoring single by Yasmani Grandal.
The Cardinals had a golden chance to tie the game in the 9th inning when Allen Craig led off the inning with a double off the left field wall. Yadier Molina then sacrificed pinch runner Adron Chambers to third. But David Freese grounded out to third and Skip Schumaker grounded out to first to end the game. it was another anguishing loss for the Redbirds.
So the Cardinals head to Los Angeles for the big four game showdown with the Dodgers. The race for the NL Wild Card will surely heat up there. The Cardinals lead L.A. by one game in the Wild Card race. The Pirates are two and a half games back. The surging Brewers and Phillies now trail the Cardinals by just three games.
