The Cardinals four game winning streak came to a crashing end on Wednesday in Denver, Colorado as the Rockies pounded the Redbirds 11-1.
Colorado had a five run second inning and a five run seventh inning to get the blow out win. Nolan Arenado’s grand slam home run in the second gave the Rockies a 6-1 lead. Cardinals starting pitcher Luke Weaver lasted just two innings and surrendered six of the run. He took the loss, dropping his record to 1-4.
Jaime Garcia came on for the next four innings and pitched shutout baseball, allowing just one hit while striking our five. But the bullpen failed after Garcia, allowing five more run in the seventh inning, highlighted by the Rockies Tom Murphy’s three run homer.
The loss drops the Cardinals record to 80-72 and still in a dog fight with the Mets and Giants for the two NL Wild Card spots.
The Redbirds take Thursday off before opening a series against the Cubs in Chicago on Friday afternoon.
