The greatest Cardinal of them all, who also happens to be one of the biggest Cardinal fans of all, weighed in on the Albert Pujols contract saga, Wednesday.
Stan ‘The Man’ Musial, sent a Christmas request to Albert , via Twitter.
It was an anxious night at Pujols` restaurant, ‘Pujols 5’, in Westport.
It was shades of the World Series. The staff had champagne on ice in anticipation of good news.
The crow was glued to the TV`s, and perhaps as much as anything, their smart phones, checking for any sign of progress; that one ‘Tweet’ that the was done.
The ‘Tweet’ of the day came from Musial.
With his grandson, Brian Schwarze`s help, Musial ‘Tweeted ‘ a photo showing Stan holding a sign that read, ‘All I want for Christmas is for Pujols to be a Cardinal’.
Schwarze said Stan saw Albert over the weekend and didn`t bring up “the contract thing”; but Musial thought Wednesday was the time to send the message, as negotiations were reportedly reaching a crescendo between the Cardinals and Pujols at Major League Baseball`s Winter Meetings in Dallas.
Schwarze said Stan was aware how Albert admired him.
‘[Albert] loves the history of the game. When you see the two of them together you can definitely tell. I have pictures of Albert on one knee, just paying respect to Stan… you like to thank Albert knows what his legacy could be here. He`s compared to Stan so much. If he stays here, he`ll have a statue… I was told albert got the picture today. I hope that really matters,’ Schwarze laughed.
Even Phillies and Rangers fans, still smarting from the Cardinals beating their teams in the post season, were with Stan on this one: Albert in another uniform just didn`t seem right.
‘I`m a Ranger girl,’ said Anita Lewis, in town from Austin, TX. ‘ So when they kicked our butts in the world series I said, `I`m never going back to Pujols then next time I go to St. Louis`. But when he said he was maybe going to leave, I was like, `alright, I`ll still go to his restaurant`… I think he`s awesome. I think he`s a cornerstone of their team. I think they should fight for him…I would drink his champagne. It`s worthy.’
‘ We said that if Pujols signed with the cubs we were going somewhere else,’ laughed Phillies fan, John McColgan, who was with a work group for Happy Hour.
Shwarze said Musial looked forward to seeing Albert break some of his long-standing Cardinals records in the years to come.
‘He`ll break the home record in the next year or two. It`ll be the number one home run record for the Cardinals. I don`t think he`ll touch the hits, though. Even grandpa said that. He had 22 years, and even at the age of 41, grandpa still hit .330,’ Schwarze laughed with pride.
Whether Albert stays or goes, the manager said his name would stay on the restaruant.
